This will be Merrick's second season

Success though, has largely been hard to come by for the Kiwis. It took until 2010 before Wellington Phoenix made their first play-offs, thanks in part to the talismanic qualities of coach Ricki Herbert. Now they fully understand how to play together, because they have been together so long, Merrick said of his side. And we have greater depth too. Our team play is really good, our movement patterns are very good. I just feel as though we're miles ahead of last year.

There is a distinct Spanish flavour at the club this season in the form of Tenerife-raised Alejandro Rodriguez Gorrin and fellow midfielder Albert Riera, who featured in two FIFA Club World Cups for local side Auckland City.

Costa Rica international Kenny Cunningham will again line-up, while Merrick believes he has brought a little-known gem to  Fifa Coins the A-League in the shape of Ajax product Roly Bonevacia. Apparently he once gave the ball away, quipped Merrick displaying his trademark dry sense of humour.
